چکیده

Veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is being more commonly used in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) due to potentially reversible illnesses. Survival from ARDS using ECMO has been reported even in patients with AIDS. However, the indications for ECMO for ARDS due to immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome (IRIS) in patients with AIDS are unknown. A 23-year-old man with AIDS and Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia was admitted to the intensive care unit with severe ARDS refractory to mechanical ventilator support requiring ECMO. Although ECMO was discontinued, a second treatment with ECMO was necessary due to IRIS-associated ARDS, resulting in an excellent patient outcome. This patient's clinical course suggests two important messages. First, ECMO is a reasonable option for the treatment of patients with ARDS even in a patient with AIDS. Second, ECMO may be effective for the treatment of patients with IRIS.

Ecmo in a diabetic patient with cerebellar infarction and ARDS- A case report

Background: Extra corporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) has been considered as a crucial modality for the management of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Since ECMO is considered to be an invasive modality and may be associated with some complications, there are strict indications for its use. Here we report successful treatment of a case of severe ARDS with Veno-Venous ECMO. Case pre...

INTRODUCTION We report a case of an adult patient with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and ventilator associated pneumonia (VAP) caused by multidrug resistant (MDR) bacteria that was successfully managed with veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation for avian influenza A (H7N9) patient with acute respiratory distress syndrome: a case report and short literature review

BACKGROUND Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is performed as an acceptable life-saving bridging procedure in patients with severe acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS).To patients with avian influenza A (H7N9)-associated ARDS, ECMO could be adopted as a feasible therapeutic solution. We present our successful experience with ECMO utilized in a respiratory failure patient with H7N9...

Lung transplantation following 107 days of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation.

Severe adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is associated with failure to maintain adequate gas exchange. There is increasing success using extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) for respiratory failure; the longest reported surviving patient has been supported by ECMO for 57 days. At best about 50% wean from ECMO and should weaning fail their course is fatal. ECMO is generally consid...

Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation for ARDS: National Trends in the United States 2008-2012.

INTRODUCTION Recent advances in technology and protocols have made the use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) a viable rescue therapy for patients with ARDS who present with refractory hypoxemia. Despite the lack of strong evidence supporting the use of ECMO in ARDS, its use seems to be increasing. We sought to determine recent trends in the use of ECMO for ARDS. We also assessed tre...
